The Père David’s deer (Elaphurus davidianus), also known as the milu or elaphure, is a species of deer native to the river valleys of China. It grazes mainly on grass and aquatic plants. Père David’s deer were hunted to extinction in their native China during the late 19th century, but were saved from total extinction by Europeans who had taken specimens back to zoos in France and Germany and successfully bred the deer in captivity. Large, brown deer with broad hoofs and dark tails. Newborns are woolly with white spots. Males grow unique antlers with a fore shaft branching two or three times while hind shafts sweep back in a simple curve often developing multiple jags. Males have large antlers with 25-39”. In Texas, they typically shed velvet August with antlers dropping in January and February. Males typically weigh 300-400 lbs.
